Signs and Symptoms of Whiplash

Signs and Symptoms of Whiplash

The term whiplash refers to a sequence of neck injuries resulting from a sudden distortion or bend of the neck. Also known as whiplash-associated disorder or WAD, this condition often occurs when something strikes you from behind. A common cause of whiplash is when a fast-moving car hits another one from behind.

When this happens, the body of the individual in the struck car immediately pushes forward, but the head does not move forward for an instant. Consequently, the head rocks up and back, thereby stretching and/or tearing some tendons, muscles, and ligaments. Also, muscles automatically contract, which brings the head forward. It may rock forward violently or too far, further tearing or stretching ligaments, tendons, and muscles.

Whiplash can also result from a collision from any direction. Other things that can cause it to include contact sports, horse riding, falling off a bike, and physical abuse. Sometimes, however, the signs and symptoms of whiplash may not appear for one day or more after the incident.

Neck Pain and Stiffness

This is a common symptom of whiplash. You can start experiencing neck pain immediately following the incident or even a few days later. Ice can help to reduce swollen ligaments and muscles. You can also use heat to increase circulation and ease stiff muscles. The pain should go away in a few days. If it persists or worsens, however, you need to check in with your doctor. You should also see your doctor if the neck pain develops into difficulty swallowing, headaches, dizziness, hand numbness, or arm numbness.

Reduced Range of Motion in the Neck

Limited or impaired range of motion in the neck is another common symptom of whiplash. You will experience this reduced neck flexion when you try to move your head in any direction. You need to perform exercises that will help relieve pain, build strength, and increase the neck flexion. However, you should avoid any forced movements and use controlled movements.

Other common signs and symptoms of whiplash include:

  • Headaches.

  • A feeling of tenderness at the back of the neck.

  • Lower back pain.

  • Pain in the hands and arms.

  • Fatigue.

  • Vision problems.

  • Dizziness.

  • Muscle spasms.

  • Pins and needles or numbness in the hands and arms.

  • Swallowing difficulties.

  • Sleep difficulties.

  • Ringing in the ears.

Sometimes, you may experience some less common symptoms of whiplash, such as poor concentration, memory loss, or irritability. Many of these symptoms will not last long; however, if they do, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible. Most people who suffer whiplash start feeling better within a few weeks, and they do not seem to experience any lasting effects.

Some people, however, continue to experience pain for many weeks, months, or even years after the incident. Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to predict how each individual with whiplash may recover. If you notice any signs or symptoms of whiplash, therefore, you need to deal with the problem as soon as possible.
